“The Hearts Behind The Door”

By Katherine Zerull, 2012 Gilda’s Club QC Intern

Many people come,

Though some say, “Not enough,”

To walk through this land called cancer,

Many are unsure of.

They come with loved ones;

Wives, mothers, husbands, sons,

And wonder what they’ll find,

Behind the bright red door.

As they cross the threshold,

And enter through the door,

Their eyes see what they assumed,

A beautiful home, alive and warm.

And just as they begin to worry, “Maybe this is not for me,”

They hear a voice, calm, soothing, filled with sincerity.

The voice tells them who they are,

And what their purpose is;

To make them all feel comfortable;

“You’re not alone in this.”

The people promise to return,

And do so frequently,

They begin to understand,

that love, not blood, defines a family,

Many people come,

Though some say, “Not enough,”

To walk through this land called cancer,

Many are unsure of.

Many have expected to find support, hope, and more,

What they weren’t expecting was to fall in love with the hearts behind the door.
