Breast Cancer. Two of the most difficult words I have ever had to say, write, or type.
I was just 38 years old when I felt a lump in my left breast on June 20, 2017. I went to my gynecologist the very next day and scheduled a mammogram. On July 5, I had a mammogram, ultrasound, met with a surgeon and had a biopsy. I was officially diagnosed with invasive ductile breast cancer on July 12, 2017.
Nothing can prepare you for a cancer diagnosis. Nothing.
Gilda’s Club helps people navigate through the difficult phase of life that comes right after a cancer diagnosis. It truly is an amazing place for cancer patients, cancer survivors and for family members to go to to learn, to heal, to feel, and to connect with others. Educational programs, support groups, exercise classes, camps and events are just a few of the ways that Gilda’s Club makes life easier and better for everyone affected by cancer.
I have participated in multiple support groups and an Enhancing Connections class where I learned how to help myself and my family through the diagnosis. I brought newly diagnosed friends with me to classes and made new friends while sitting on the comfy couches at Gilda’s Club. I have cried until the tears ran dry, laughed so hard my belly hurt, and learned to accept the new me at Gilda’s Club Quad Cities.
It takes a village to go through this cancer journey and my village started with the big red door at Gilda’s Club!
Gilda’s Club cannot continue to support those in our community who have been impacted by cancer without YOUR help. Your gift of just $40 through the Birdies for Charity program provides one month of support for a member like me. Or, a $500 gift will cover all the services for one member for an entire year. And, what’s great about donating through the Birdies for Charity program, is that your gift will receive a minimum 5% match helping to spread your gift to even more members in need!
With your support, we truly can Take on Cancer Together. Thank you for helping to ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.
